Handling Unclaimed Dogs Policy

Notification Process

1. If a dog is not picked up by the agreed-upon date as stated in the boarding agreement, the dog will be considered abandoned after reasonable attempts to contact the owner have failed.

2. Within seven (7) days of the missed pick-up date, a notice of abandonment must be sent to the owner via certified mail to their last known address. The notice will outline:

• The missed pick-up date.

• Charges incurred for boarding past the agreed date.

• The potential consequences, including the dog being considered abandoned.

Contact Attempts

• Make at least three (3) attempts to contact the owner by phone or email within the initial seven days before sending the certified mail notice.

Owner’s Reclamation Period

3. After the notice is sent, the owner has fourteen (14) days to reclaim the dog by:

• Paying all reasonable boarding fees and other charges incurred.

• Arranging a new pick-up date.

When a Dog is Considered Abandoned

​

4. If the owner does not respond or reclaim the dog within the 14-day period:

• The owner’s rights to the dog are considered waived.

• Despite diligent efforts to contact the owner, if no response is received within an additional seven (7) days, the dog may be deemed legally abandoned.

Disposition of Abandoned Dogs

5. Following the 21-day total waiting period:

• You may transfer the dog to a local animal shelter or rescue.

• All transfers must follow humane practices as outlined by Iowa’s Animal Welfare laws.

 

Legal and Record-Keeping Requirements

6. Ensure all records are properly maintained, including:

• The certified mail notice.

• All contact attempts (phone, email, etc.).

• Boarding and vaccination records.

7. Display a conspicuous notice of this policy in your facility and include it in client contracts to ensure owners are aware of these terms.

Involving Authorities

8. If legal disputes arise or a shelter refuses to accept the dog, consult local authorities or legal counsel for further assistance.
